AAC Handbook Definitions: Credentials


A. CLASSIFICATION OF ARTISTS 

1. Member, Juried Member, Merit Member, Advanced Merit Member and Member of Excellence. 

2. Classification may be achieved in all art medium divisions; however, classification in any division must be earned by credits in that art media division only. (See EXHIBITIONS, Section D, DIVISIONS) 

3. To achieve a credential level, members are required to have 10 hours of recorded AAC volunteer time.

B. JURIED CREDITS and AWARD CREDITS 

1. Each First, Second and Third Place Winner in the Grandview Gallery REGULAR SCHEDULED SHOWS earns one AWARD CREDIT. 

2. Although five Honorable Mention Awards are given at each REGULAR SCHEDULED SHOW at the Grandview Gallery, no award credit is applied; however, JURIED credit is applied for acceptance into the special show. 

3. Each piece accepted in the SPECIAL JURIED SHOWS (Dogwood & December Shows) at the Grandview Gallery earns a JURIED CREDIT, but only one credit per show is applied toward classification. 

4. Each First, Second and Third Place Winner in an AAC SPECIAL JURIED SHOW at the Grandview Gallery earns an AWARD CREDIT, but only one credit (juried OR award) is applied toward classification.

 5. Each piece accepted in the AAC TRAVELING SHOW earns an OUTSIDE JURIED CREDIT, but only one credit is applied toward classification. 

6. Best in Show and five Merit Award Winners in the AAC TRAVELING SHOW earn AWARD CREDIT, but only one credit is applied toward classification. 

7. AAC OUTSIDE SHOWS juried and award credit information, as approved by the Board of Directors, shall be set forth in each shows prospectus. 

 

C. ALLOCATION OF JURIED CREDITS AND AWARD CREDITS 

 

1. See AAC BYLAWS, ARTICLE III, SECTION D, CREDENTIALS CLASSIFICATION for definition of the requirements of each classification. 

2. From all AAC Grandview Gallery shows, the total JURIED credits allowed toward JURIED MEMBER status: 2 toward MERIT MEMBER status: 5 toward ADVANCED MERIT MEMBER status: 10 toward MEMBER OF EXCELLENCE status: 15 

3. From AAC SPECIAL JURIED SHOWS (i.e. December, Dogwood), the total AWARD credits allowed toward JURIED MEMBER status are None required toward MERIT MEMBER status: 1 toward ADVANCED MERIT MEMBER status: 2 (total) toward MEMBER OF EXCELLENCE status: 2 (total) 

4. The remainder of JURIED credits and AWARD credits shall be earned in APPROVED SHOWS (shows other than AAC sponsored Exhibitions) to reach the desired CLASSIFICATION. 

5. For classification status, a piece of work may count only once, even if juried in a future show by another judge. Applied credit may be re-classified for highest and best use.

6. If JURIED work, already used toward JURIED CREDIT, wins an award in a future show, it may count as an AWARD CREDIT. 

7. In the event of multiple JURIED or AWARD works in one division to one person in a single show, only one credit (either JURIED or AWARD) shall be counted. 

8. Once MEMBER OF EXCELLENCE status has been achieved, no further credentials will be applied. These members may request their records for their own use.

D. REGISTRATION OF JURIED CREDITS and AWARD CREDITS 

1. A list of Juried and Award Credits earned by each artist's entitled works is maintained by the Credentials Chairperson.

 2. The Credentials Chairperson may apply AAC Gallery Exhibition JURIED CREDITS and AWARD CREDITS to those earning same (Grandview Gallery Regular Shows, Traveling Show, AAC Special Juried and Outside Shows). 

3. Each member is responsible for registering information with the Credentials Chairperson regarding any JURIED CREDITS or AWARD CREDITS earned in an APPROVED SHOW (shows other than AAC Sponsored Exhibitions). A form is REQUIRED to register credits and no credits shall be applied without same. 

4. Each member is responsible for submitting a request for show approval of those shows which do not currently appear on the APPROVED SHOWS list, or any amendment thereof. A form is REQUIRED for requesting such approval and no action will be taken without same. 

5. CREDIT ACHIEVED PRIOR TO MEMBERSHIP WILL NOT QUALIFY FOR AAC CREDENTIALING. 

E. APPROVED SHOWS 

1. These are shows/exhibitions OTHER than AAC Grandview Gallery Exhibitions, presented to the Board of Directors by the Credentials Chairperson and approved. They are divided into Local, State, Regional and National. AWARD CREDIT may be the only credit given in some shows. The APPROVED SHOWS list is available on request at the Grandview Center. 

2. Requests for Juried Credit and Award Credit must be presented to the Credentials Chairperson by the artist within three (3) years from the date of the exhibit. 

3. The form, REQUEST FOR JURIED CREDIT or AWARD CREDIT, shall be presented by the artist to the Credentials Chairperson and shall include: a. Title of Exhibition. b. Title of work accepted. c. Proof of acceptance. d. Award earned (if applicable).

5. The Credentials Chair will make a determination if JURIED CREDIT or AWARD CREDIT is applicable. 

F. SHOWS NOT YET APPROVED BY THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS 

1. These are shows which have never been presented to the Board of Directors for approval. 

2. The form, REQUEST FOR SHOW APPROVAL BY THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS FOR JURIED OR AWARD CREDITS, shall be presented by the artist to the Credentials Chairperson and shall include: a. Title of Exhibition. b. Name and brief biography of the Judge(s). c. Number of entries submitted and number of entries accepted. d. Geographical area covered and included in the show. e. Prizes, purchase awards, ribbon awards for Place Winners, Best in Show, Merit, Honorable Mention, etc. f. Brochure of the show, if available. 

3. A Request for Juried Credit or Award Credit should be presented to the Credentials Chairperson at the same time. 

4. The Credentials Chairperson will advise the artist of the decision of the Board of Directors and shall apply any credits accordingly. The following guidelines are herein defined to simplify and allow the Credentials Chairperson to approve of shows without Board approval if all of the criteria are met. Exceptions are set forth to allow trial periods to newer shows that might have other incentives or be in the nature of a special event. Definitions: Acceptance Ratio - The ratio of acceptance is defined as the number of accepted works /number of entered works. Purchase Award Shows - will be credited if the judge designates the purchase award. 

 

Regional/National/International Show: 1) Acceptance Ratio - shows will have a maximum of 33 1/3 percent. 2) Awards - shows must have cash awards. Minimum First Place $500. 3) Judge Credentials: a) Minimum four years judging experience. b) An affiliation to a university or museum is desirable. c) Curator as part of the title is desirable. d) An artist with a reputation is acceptable. e) Affiliation to a university or museum is desirable. 4) Shows longevity - Minimum two years.

Local/State Show: 1) Acceptance Ratio - at 50 percent maximum. 2) Awards - a cash award is required. 3) Judge Credentials: a) Minimum two years judging experience. b) An affiliation to a university or museum is desirable. c) Curator as part of the title is acceptable. d) An artist with a local reputation is acceptable. e) A Gallery owner with at least one of the following is acceptable: i. An affiliation to a university or museum. ii. Curator as part of the title. iii. Minimum four years judging experience. 4. Affiliation - To a university or museum is desirable. 5. Shows longevity - Minimum two years.

Exceptions: 

1) Credentials Chairperson overrides: a) The Credential Chairperson may allow a one-year probation to a show with a shorter longevity by having an excellent cash award program. Minimum First Place $500. b) If for any reason an existing approved show does not meet these guidelines, an exception may be made for one year notifying the Board of the exception.

2) Board of Directors overrides: The board may override any one criterion as a probation trial basis submitted by the Credentials Chairperson. G. NON-APPROVED SHOWS 1. These are shows OTHER than AAC Gallery Exhibitions, which invite MEMBERS ONLY to participate. 2. EXCEPTION: Georgia Watercolor Society, MEMBERS EXHIBITION Southeastern Pastel Society, MEMBERS EXHIBITION. A LIST OF SHOWS APPROVED BY THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF CLASSIFICATION IS AVAILABLE ON REQUEST AT GRANDVIEW CENTER.

H. QUICK REFERENCE FOR CREDENTIALS CLASSIFICATION REQUIREMENTS 

1. JURIED MEMBER 4 Total Credits 2 from AAC Sponsored Gallery Shows 2 from other AAC Approved Shows 10 hours recorded AAC volunteer hours 

2. MERIT MEMBER 10 Total Credits Not more than 5 from AAC Sponsored Gallery Shows 2 Awards, only 1 from AAC Sponsored Gallery Shows and 1 from AAC Approved Shows 10 hours recorded AAC volunteer hours 

3. ADVANCED MERIT MEMBER 20 Total Credits Not more than 10 from AAC Sponsored Gallery Shows 4 State AAC Approved Shows 4 Awards, only 2 from AAC Sponsored Gallery Shows and 2 from AAC Approved Shows 10 hours recorded AAC volunteer hours 

4. MEMBER OF EXCELLENCE 30 Total Credits Not more than 15 from AAC Sponsored Gallery Shows 4 from State, Regional or National AAC Approved Shows 4 Awards, only 2 from AAC Sponsored Gallery Shows and 2 from Regional or National AAC Approved Shows 10 hours recorded AAC volunteer hours
